What is Needed Immediately After Birth?

What is needed right after childbirth: making a list

A properly packed hospital bag ensures a comfortable stay for the mother and baby. However, the list for the mother after childbirth always turns out to be very large: it includes personal hygiene products, clothing, and medications for both.

To avoid bringing too much to the maternity hospital, you should contact the healthcare institution directly or read reviews on the Internet. As a rule, each maternity hospital provides the mother and child with some of the necessary items, so it’s not always necessary to bring them. Therefore, if you find out in advance what the doctors will provide on site, you can significantly lighten your baggage.

During and immediately after giving birth, the mother will need:

  • change of clothes;
  • footwear;
  • drinks and food during labor;
  • nursing bra;
  • breast pads;
  • nipple cream;
  • sanitary pads;
  • personal hygiene products.

When choosing clothes, it is important not to get carried away: only a nightgown and a couple of comfortable home outfits will be needed on the spot. For footwear to move around inside the building, it is better to choose washable slippers – they are comfortable and suitable for trips to the shower.

As for water, it is mandatory to have it with you during labor. Women experience intense thirst during childbirth. Any other drinks will do instead of water. It is also necessary to choose high-energy food for yourself, which will quickly replenish lost energy and provide new strength.

The most important thing is not to forget about is the documents. On the eve of childbirth, it is better to always have them with you.

List – what is needed immediately after birth for the baby:

  • diapers – medium pack for newborns;
  • diapers – 2-3 pieces;
  • clothing according to the season + a tie-up bonnet;
  • baby soap;
  • festive clothes for discharge.

For convenience, baby soap can be replaced with gel – it is more convenient and hygienic. In terms of clothing, it’s enough to take 2-3 outfits to choose from. These can be shirts, bodysuits, or sleepsuits. If you’ve chosen clothes with open sleeves, don’t forget about mittens.

What you need to have at home – checklist for postpartum moms

By the time of discharge, everything should be ready at the place of residence for the mother and child upon their arrival. And it’s not balloons above the crib – although, of course, special decoration can also take place.

First of all, these are bulky items that are always purchased in advance. They include:

  • baby crib;
  • bathtub for bathing;
  • changing table;
  • stroller.

Overall, everything is very individual. Some women forego buying a changing table, performing all tasks on the bed. This kind of saving eventually takes a toll on the back. You may not need to buy a crib if co-sleeping is planned. Strollers are often passed up by those who prefer slings and baby carriers.

Also, you should purchase for the baby:

  • change of clothes;
  • warm diapers;
  • pacifiers;
  • bottles;
  • formula in case of refusal of breastfeeding;
  • a first aid kit with commonly used medications;
  • bed linens;
  • separate towel.

Everything else can be purchased as needed.

In a home where a young mother lives with her child, all conditions for comfortable household management should be created. This means there should be an ample supply of all necessary items. Stocks of household chemicals, groceries, and personal hygiene products are useful. The importance of such supplies is explained by the fact that a mother of a newborn is limited in mobility. She doesn’t always have the opportunity to go to the store for necessary items at a convenient time. To avoid situations where the salt runs out, the child is sleeping, and it’s scary to leave alone, it’s advisable to keep a spare pack—problem solved.

Individual items a mother may need postpartum include a bandage, breast pump, and other medical supplies.
