Sex During the First Trimester

Is it possible to have sex in the 1st trimester?

Intimacy during pregnancy often raises questions and concerns for the couple. Does a woman’s body now belong only to the growing baby? Fortunately, actual evidence-based restrictions for sex in the 1st trimester are quite rare. You just need to observe reasonable precautions, and you can enjoy intimacy, giving each other love and tenderness, and passing these feelings along to the future child.

Sex in the first trimester: what doctors say

Pregnancy is not an illness. Why should restrictions apply to normal activities, such as marital intimacy, during this period? On the contrary, there may be many additional benefits of having sex in the first trimester:

  • further strengthening of the tender relationship between spouses;
  • no need to worry about contraception and you can fully give yourself to each other;
  • orgasm releases endorphins, which boosts a woman’s mood and positively affects her well-being;
  • the growing fetus receives a dose of ‘happiness hormones.’

All this is true for a normally progressing pregnancy. There are some medical contraindications to sex in the first trimester when the woman’s new condition is still so fragile and unstable.

  1. Previously unsaved pregnancies: if a woman has experienced miscarriages, especially in the early stages, it’s better to be cautious during these important weeks.
  2. Bleeding or ‘spotting’ is a reason not only to refrain from sex but also to immediately consult a doctor.
  3. Tone or hypertonicity of the uterus: the doctor will determine this during an ultrasound, or the expectant mother herself will feel it through discomfort in the lower abdomen.
  4. Close proximity of the placenta to the cervix or its detachment, previa – all these fall within your gynecologist’s expertise.
  5. Health problems in a partner – if a man has sexually transmitted infections, sexual intercourse cannot be considered.

Any threats to pregnancy are a reason to limit or temporarily remove intimacy.

So, the first answer to the question of whether sex is permissible during the first trimester should be given by a doctor.

Desire must be mutual

Sometimes, the doctor gives the green light, but the woman feels no desire for sex in the first trimester. Why does this happen? There are many reasons:

  • hormonal “storm,” when libido drops can be quickly replaced by an increase;
  • fears and worries related to the new condition;
  • family issues;
  • inevitable deterioration in well-being – toxicosis, heartburn, general weakness, etc.;
  • potential increased sensitivity in the breasts.

Husbands should be especially attentive: even if sex is possible in the first trimester, it is not always necessary just because the man insists on it. It’s important to show understanding and tenderness towards the future mother of your child: most of these kinds of issues will quickly dissipate, and normal intimate life will resume.

Important intimate nuances in the 1st trimester

With pregnancy, a woman’s life completely changes, and this will affect intimacy. For some time, a number of intimate habits will need to be adjusted. This is due to physiological, hormonal, and psychological reasons.

Here are 5 important recommendations to safely engage in sex during the first trimester of pregnancy.

  1. No to passionate outbursts. During this period, it is essential to completely avoid rough expressions of mutual desire. No rudeness, even if the couple previously enjoyed it: it is time for tenderness and some restraint.
  2. Positions, positions. In the first trimester, when the belly has not yet grown, there is no need to restrict choice of position too much. Later, this will need consideration. It’s important to be cautious in positions where penetration is particularly deep – it’s better to postpone them to the ‘post-pregnancy’ future. In the absence of general contraindications, the least risky positions are ‘spooning’ (lying on the side) and ‘woman on top’.
  3. Oral affection is possible. There are no specific restrictions here, except the one absolutely obvious: the oral cavity of the partners, especially the man, must be healthy. Infectious diseases, such as herpes, exclude this type of intimacy, not only during pregnancy.
  4. A woman’s discomfort should not be ignored. During this important period, comfort and convenience for the woman during sex are key foundational criteria for safety. Discomfort in a certain position or movements by the man almost always indicates potential risks. Therefore, one should monitor their well-being and protect it. Do not sacrifice your health and risk the baby for the sake of the partner’s pleasure. A loving husband will understand this and will strive to ensure his wife’s comfort.

Therefore, having sex in the first trimester of pregnancy is quite possible if you remember some important nuances.
